ich bin mir selber fremd geworden - Lighting Design
Ich bin mir selber fremd geworden – Stimmen aus dem Frauenzuchthaus Hoheneck is a performative concert about the women’s prison Hoheneck near Stollberg, a central site of political persecution in the GDR. The performance combines contemporary music, choreography, text, and light to address the experiences of women imprisoned for political reasons and attempted “flight from the Republic”.
Artistic approach (light)
The lighting design translates the colorless, monotonous everyday life of Hoheneck into a grayscale, filmic light language that feels drained, narrow, and repetitive. Faces, hands, and silhouettes appear only fleetingly, as if in fragments of a black-and-white film, while light and shadow actively control proximity, distance, and isolation between the performers.
The performers move between sewing machines, walls, and instruments, and the light sculpts these elements into a confined, shifting architecture that constantly negotiates exposure and concealment, visibility and erasure.
